I’ve been dying to knit something with Rico Creative Galaxy Chunky ever since we started stocking it, then at Christmas I was given a copy of the book Entrelac by by Rosemary Drysdale and I saw the perfect opportunity to try out the yarn and learn a new technique at the same time.

The result is this cowl, which I absolutely adore! I think that variegated yarns work well with the entrelac technique and the little sparkles from the sequins are a lovely touch.

Rico Essentials Alpaca DK and Chunky

I thought you might like to see these fingerless gloves that I knitted for my brother this Christmas. The yarn I used was Rico Essentials Alpaca DK.

This yarn is a 50/50 mix of highland wool and alpaca and available in 6 natural coloured shades. It feels lovely and soft and of superb quality. I enjoyed knitting with it and my brother likes his gloves!

It is also available in a chunky yarn too.

Rico Eco Tinto Chunky

Rico Eco Tinto Chunky is an ultra soft 100% wool roving that knits up very quickly on 7mm needles. The wool is organic and dyed using environmentally friendly dyes. Despite not being plied or twisted, the yarn is very strong and knits up well when used in colourwork or textured knits.

Rico Fashion Tweed Super Chunky

Rico’s Tweed Super Chunky is a good value super chunky yarn, new for Autumn 2011. It’s 50% wool, 45% acrylic, 5% viscose and is quick to knit and soft to touch. Available in 6 tweedy shades.

It could be used as alternative to Rowan Drift or Big Wool as you should be able to achieve the same tension.

Rico Can Can Glitz

If you liked knitting with Rico’s Can Can yarn, then I’m sure you will love the new version for this Autumn, called Can Can Glitz. Many other brands have launched their own version of a glittery Can Can type scarf yarn this season too, but I do feel that this one is the best. The glitter isn’t just an add-on, it’s actually part of the yarn itself.

It comes in 8 different shades and knits up on 7-8mm needles, in just the same way. However it is worth noting that these glittery shades are only 150g balls (45m). So if you are used to knitting 2 scarves from a 200g (60m) ball of original Can Can, then you will need to make the scarves a bit smaller and narrower if you want to do the same.

Rico Linen Blend

Rico have a new yarn for summer called Linen Blend. It’s an aran weight yarn that is a blend of 45% viscose, 40% cotton and 15% linen. It’s currently only available in 6 shades but all are nice for a summer garment.

There are 3 pattern leaflets to go with the yarn, although you can of course substitute the yarn for any other aran yarn.

Rico Creative Filz and Fun Magic

If you enjoy felting projects then you might be interested in this felting yarn from Rico Design. It’s called Creative Filz and Fun Magic and what is different about it, is the variegated colour changes that create an sort of fair-isle effect. After felting it forms a sturdy fabric that is perfect for bags, hats and slippers.

This yarn is normally priced at £2.50 a ball, but we’ve currently got it on special offer at just £1.99 a ball.

Rico Superba Bamboo – a new sock yarn

Rico Superba Bamboo is a new sock yarn from Rico. Made from 50% merino, 25% polyamide and 25% bamboo, it is one of the softest self-striping sock yarns that I’ve come across and I can’t wait to make a pair of socks with it (once I’ve finished all my other WIPs!)

It has a lovely sheen to it and comes in some really wearable shades. At £7 a ball, it’s not a bad price for sock yarn either.
